The company Universal Display Corporation, which develops solutions for OLED display was rewarded with a contract Small Business Innovation Research program (SBIR) State the US Air Force Research Laboratory.
The project in question is entitled "Low-Power Direct-View Flexible Displays".
This is flexible OLED screens, low power, resistant to ejection and made from materials not drink.
These screens are designed for aircraft cockpits (Air Force forces), they offer the ability to wireless communications, high image quality and it seems a good efficiency for energy management.
Their role will be to act as a second screen for pilots to handle printed maps and checklists, their flexibility to be easily rolled up and stored during flight.
The prize, amounting to $ 750,000 (about € 520 000), is involved in Phase 2 of the SBIR is to say, the proof that the principle is viable / reliable (Proof Of Concept) followed by the development the prototype. The $ 750 000 additional subsidies are granted for projects with high potential.
Note that the project is developed in partnership with L-3 Communications Display System and LG Display.
